How Long Does It Take to Cremate a Pet? Timeline and Expectations

Losing a pet is devastating. And deciding to take further steps might be overwhelming. This is why most people who have pets opt to use cremation as a dignified means of saying farewell. When you consider cremation, don’t just understand how much time it takes. Understand what happens during the process, too.

Understanding the Pet Cremation Process

Pet cremation is a respectful and smooth procedure during which your pet’s body is transformed into ashes under the influence of very high temperatures. This is carried out in a special room called a cremator. The whole exercise is conducted with great responsibility to allow dignity and respect.

The cremation lasts approximately 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the size of your pet. Birds or cats need less time compared to dogs. After the cremation process, the remains are cooled down, processed, and given back to you.

Factors Affecting Cremation Duration

Whether your pet died naturally or you carried out pet euthanasia, cremation usually follows. The humane and stress-free method of assisting your pet to die is euthanasia, which is administered by a vet most of the time.

Your vet will also be able to tell you how long the whole process will take and what influences it. Typically, some aspects may influence the duration of cremation. The most common is the size and weight of your pet. When pets are bigger, they spend more time in the cremator since they take time to be broken down.

The form of cremation is also important. You may want to have private cremation, in which case your pet is alone in the chamber. Usually, this takes longer due to additional care procedures. Group cremation, in which a number of pets are cremated at once, is generally faster but does not include returning the ashes to the owner.

The cremation facility itself can also influence the time scale. Depending on its busyness, some places might require a wait time before starting the process. If you are short of time, you may inquire about same-day or express services.

Timeline to Receive Your Pet’s Ashes

Once the proper cremation has been completed, it takes a little time before you receive your pet’s ashes. Another 24 to 72 hours may be required for cooling, processing, and packaging. This varies depending on the cremation center and whether you have selected any special services. Here is a brief outline of what is in store:

  • Cremation time
  • Cooling & ash processing
  • Return of ashes

Setting Expectations with the Cremation Provider

Be frank with the cremation provider at all times. Ask them how long it will all take, what form of cremation they provide, and when you will get your pet’s ashes. Timelines or services might vary slightly with each provider.

Others provide witnessing services, so you may be present during the cremation. Some will collect the ashes deliver them and deliver them to your doorstep. So, the choice is yours to make.

Pet cremation provides a relaxing method for commemorating the memory of your furry friend. Being aware of the timeline and the process makes you feel more prepared. This way, your pet won’t just receive love. It will also get respect throughout the process, no matter the duration.
